Edward Newgate, better known as Whitebeard, the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, was known as the "Man closest to One Piece" or "The Strongest Man in the World" (世界最強の男 Sekai Saikyo no Otoko) and was one of the Yonkou that ruled over the New World. While attempting to rescue Portgas D. Ace, Newgate met his end during the Battle of Marineford at the hands of his former subordinate, Marshall D. Teach, and his crew.
Edward Newgate is first mentionned by Smoker during the latter's encounter with Ace in Arabasta under his Whitebeard nickname. But his first appearance only occurs after the Shichibukai nomination meeting when he received a letter from Shanks. His real name is then also revealed through an infobox
